Company history

1848

Foundation of the company in Vöcklabruck by Isidor Karl Braun. Together with his sons he established a factory for the producation of files and forged commodities.

Soon the range of products was enlarged with cuirasses, as they succeeded in producing an extraordinarily resistant chrome-nickel-vanadium steel whose high elasticity was guaranteed specail shot-proof.

1854

The Braun brothers secured the first order for the supply of files, steel, military saddles and shot-proof cuirasses for the emperor's arsenal. At the world exhibitions and fairs in Europe the company was awarded many prizes and medals.

1890

Kaiser Franz Josef visited the factory and handed over a valuable diamond ring as a token of his appreciation. The products were already being exported into many European countries.

1906

The Zöblmühle was acquired. The water power of the same was used for the drive of a one-phase- generator for the supply of a Kjellin induction furnace. At that time Braun pointed the way ahead with the first induction furnace in Central Europe.

1914

During the First World War the company employed 350 people in order to be able to supply the numerous cuirasses and military articles for the Austrian army.

1925

1925 after the early dead of Isidor Adolf the company was managed partly by distant relatives of the Braun family. During the economical crisis at the end of the twenties the number of employees decreased to 10 persons. The steel mill Zöblmühle and the old hammer mill Pichlwang had to be sold. Doughter Stephanie and son-in-law Josef Ringer maintained the rest of the company until the returned owners and specialists were able to re-organise the company in 1945.

1944

1944 the company was split for the first time. Stephanie and Josef Ringer became independent with Stephanie's heritage, a tool forge.

1945 - 1960

In this time mainly files were produced. Automatons and special machines for the production of files developed by Martin Braun made it possible to increase the monthly production from 15.000 to 150.000 pieces with the same staff. So the company was able to compete world wide. A large order from the USA in 1957, acquired by Ernst Braun, kept the company busy for many years. The solvency of the company was continuously improved through the clever finanzing of brother-in-law Walter Dusl.

1960

Due to the necessity of the development of the file producing machines and the repair of these a new division developed: mechanical engineering. At first the file cutting, grinding and forging machines and trash rack cleaners were only produced for the company's own requirements, later they were also sold to other companies.

1962

The production of abrasives was started by Ernst Braun and later on changed to tailoring and trading of these.

1965

Entry into the technology of abrasive cutting. The division abrasive cutting and machinery for steel mills came into being. Repurchase and extension of the hydroelectric power plant Zöblmühle.

1979

Begin of the extension of the range of products for power plants and their successful distribution. The division steel structures for water power plants came into being.

1982

Our know-how in the cutting technology was enhanced by the step into the sawing technology with diamond tools for concrete and stone.

1989

Second splitting of the company:
I. Braun's Söhne (Michael Braun)
Braun Kraftwerke (DI Martin Braun)
Braun Maschinenfabrik (DI Martin Braun)
