Before or after peeling most induction-hardened rods must be cut to finished lengths. Sometimes the rod ends must be cut off (cropped). Abrasive cutting is usually performed in cold condition. The abrasive cut-off machine is operated either semi-automatic (by the operator from the control desk) or fully automatic via interconnection to the control system of the upstream and downstream machines. The quality of the cutting surfaces is of high importance. If the material cross sections are very small, narrow layers of several rods are frequently severed by one chop-stroke cut.
